Makaton Training
Makaton signs help children and adults who have communication difficulties by providing visual support, slowing the pace of interaction, and providing an additional clue where speech is unclear. Makaton promotes the development of speech.
I am a regional Makaton tutor and run regular training sessions for parents, teaching staff and therapists for all levels of Makaton.
There are 4 levels of Makaton training, with each level progressively adding to your signing vocabulary. You will learn how to sign phrases and sentences for everyday life and learning. Each level is a full day of training. You will receive an official Makaton certificate at the end of each level.
The cost for each workshop will vary slightly depending on the venue, but will be about £90. This includes the participants' manual (worth £20).
Level 1
Level 1 training provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme and a wider understanding of learning and communication difficulties. The Level 1 Workshop includes how to start using Makaton in everyday situations. The vocabulary encompasses immediate wants and needs, home, familiar people, food, events, activities and objects. You will discover hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use to maximise communication.
Level 2
Level 2 training provides a practical learning session on how apply the Makaton Language Programme. We build on topics learnt from Level 1 training including people, food, activities, objects and events. New vocabulary will be introduced for the school environment and work places. You will begin to learn more abstract concepts such as spatial locations, attributes, pronouns and actions.
Level 3
The Level 3 Workshop starts with a refresher on the signs taught in Levels 1 and 2, building on topics such as people, activities, events and objects. New vocabulary will be introduced for personal development; feelings, interests and community. You will learn more abstract concepts of thinking and reasoning.
Level 4
The Level 4 Workshop will start with a refresher on the signs taught in Levels 1,2 and 3, building on topics such as feelings and interests. New vocabulary will be introduced for life skills, money, quantities, numbers and time. You will be introduced to vocabulary around personal relationships.
